The Nightmare After Christmas

On Boxing Day 2015, parts of West Yorkshire were hit by floods. The worst affected area was Calderdale. During and after the floods, data have been important to deal with recovery and build resilience for next time. Calderdale Data Works now have a dataset on flooding that includes Calderdale's flood relief hubs and a Gauge Map showing real-time river levels.

In the aftermath of the floods, we brought together over 100 people for #FloodHack at ODI Leeds to pool knowledge, share ideas, and build solutions to flooding. Lots of things came out of the event including SimFlood, a floating art project named Flotsam and Jetsam, a flooding photomap, and we've started extending an internet of things flood sensor network into Bradford.
