Innovating with Defra Data

Innovating with Defra Data - a series of fortunate events

Here at ODI Leeds, we'll be starting the new year with a whirlwind of events as part of our work with Defra. They have been working really hard to release and create value from the thousands of data sets that they have already released through the 'Defra family'.

We have two main areas of work:

  • The first is to work with the data that has been released and use open innovation to work out what questions we want to ask of it and how it can help us all with the challenges that we are facing
  • The second is to have a deep data dive focussed upon data relating to air quality

Once we have completed this work we will be helping Defra to shape their strategy and future activity. Join us on January 25th for an open meeting with Defra, where you can start asking questions, making requests for datasets, or share what you've already been up to with Defra data. Meetings will be taking place in London and Bristol at the same time, so we're hoping to spread the conversation as far and wide as possible. There will be a collaborative Google Doc for everyone to contribute to so we've got a place to keep questions, requests, suggestions, etc.

To get things started, we'll be holding a casual 'drop-in' session at lunchtime on January 11th from 12:30-13:30 to chat about #AirHack, followed by another drop-in session on February 3rd from 12:00-13:00. Come along to ask us questions, find out about #AirHack, what you need to bring, how to get involved, etc. There's no need to register, just turn up at the times mentioned above and we'll have a good chat.

Following on from the open meeting, we will be hosting #AirHack - a 2-day hackathon-style event to tackle air quality. Taking place over Friday 24 and Saturday 25 Feb, we invite anyone - data wranglers, programmers, makers, story-tellers, community orgs, policy makers, etc - to get stuck in and have fun whilst working on air quality solutions. You don't need to be a computer wizard to take part - you can get as much done with post-its and pens as you can with code.

On March 30th, we will be facilitating a 1-day innovation workshop with Defra and we invite anyone with a Defra-data-powered project to come along and show us what you've been up to. It could be something developed at #AirHack or perhaps you've been working on it a while and want to ask Defra for more data. Whatever your interest, pop along! It's a great opportunity to meet with other people using Defra data, and a chance to push Defra for more data or for more updates, etc.

This stellar line-up could only be possible thanks to Defra, Leeds City Council, Bradford City Council, Highways England, and the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics and Institute for Transport Studies at Leeds University. We are also hoping to be working with The RSA.

We hope to see you in the new year ;)
