UK Power Networks joins us as our latest sponsor

Our sponsors help shape our work. Together we identify data and innovation challenges and collaboratively work on these. This might be internal challenges, or working together to bid for and deliver work elsewhere. In this way, our work is as diverse as our sponsorship network; collaborating with both the public and private sector, and with sectors including health, transport and energy. Having worked with UK Power Networks throughout 2020 and 2021, we’re delighted that they’ve joined us as our newest sponsor!

UK Power Networks own and maintain substations, electricity cables and power lines across London, the South East and East of England. They are responsible for ensuring electricity flows reliably, safely, and securely to homes and businesses across these regions. In handling these power flows, UK Power Networks uses and produces significant volumes of data, including the existing ability of their network to allow the connection of renewable generators such as solar photovoltaics and wind turbines, or electric vehicle charge points.

In 2021, UK Power Networks developed and published an ambitious Digitalisation Strategy and Action Plan. This was in part driven by a changing regulatory landscape in which Ofgem is increasingly requiring energy companies to release more open data, and in part driven by the recognition that becoming more data-centric allows the organisation to operate more effectively. Two additional notable developments in 2021 include; the launch of their Open Data Portal; and the publication of their Open Data Principles.

In collaborating with UK Power Networks on their Enabling Open Energy Data programme and supporting the publication of their Heat Street data, it was clear that we shared common ground with similar values. Both organisations care deeply about the climate crisis and believe that open collaboration and open/shared data can help us collectively find ways to mitigate this.

As part of UK Power Networks 2022 sponsorship, we have been helping them to visualise their Distributed Energy Future Scenarios, and look forward to welcoming them to our regular sponsor network activities soon. We’re also looking forward to hearing from them at our next Powered Up event in April 2022.
