ODI Leeds has had a long held belief that open data saves lives. It's been a theme of theirs since 2019. So when the world faced the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, they had to act. The question is: what could or should they do?

The answer was to form the Open Data Saves Lives: Covid 19 community. Through a regular series of scheduled events, they brought together people working with health data from across the spectrum, from local charities to teams within the NHS. Considered in retrospect, the topics they covered formed a programme of discussion that they hope has enabled a more effective response to the Covid-19 threat. More than anything else, the community has acted as a lightning rod for the thought that we should be using data to save lives, not saving data for a rainy day.

In this lunchtime lecture, Giles Dring, Head of Delivery at ODI Leeds, will outline what the Open Data Saves Lives community has done over the last year, and share some of the principles and approaches to making it successful.
